Coffee Connections – Community Engagement

Huron Schools and the City of Huron are conducting their first round of Coffee Connections for 2014-15. Huron City Manager, Andy White, and Huron Schools Superintendent, Dennis Muratori, will host the upcoming event at the Huron Berardi’s, 9–10 AM on Saturday, September 13.  Coffee and pastries will be served.

The community engagement sessions are a series of informal discussions and information sharing opportunities. Coffee Connections allow for officials to provide clarification on various topics and to engage in conversation with community members. Topics of recent interest include student drug testing, the schools upcoming renewal levy and proposed legislative changes to the Common Core. City Manger Andy White will update guests on various key topics impacting the residents of Huron.

It’s Hunting Season

If you have awoken to the sound of gunshots lately, it is not because there is a rash of crimes in Huron.  Hunting season is upon us, and hunting is legal within Huron City limits at the Spoil Site at the mouth of the Huron River.  September 1 marked the beginning of the early season for Canada geese and mourning doves, and September 6 was the beginning of the teal season. (Teal are a small duck.)  All hunters must be licensed and must use non-toxic shot.  Hunting is permitted from sunrise to sunset.  When walking on the pier over the next few weeks, please be aware that hunters likely will be present in the vicinity.  If you are interested in learning more about hunting regulations in Ohio, visit the Ohio Division of Wildlife at http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/wildlife-home/post/migratory-bird-and-waterfowl-seasons.

Duncan Charles Norwell

Duncan Charles Norwell, 75, of Huron, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

He was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Ashland, Wis., and moved to Huron in 1972, where he raised his family and worked for Pillsbury until his retirement.

He enjoyed reading, the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Cubs and being “Pop Pop” to his grandkids. He was a member of the Elks Club in Upper Sandusky. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judy; children, Christina (Shayne) Fischer of Huron, Douglas (Cathy) Norwell of Cincinnati, Patrick (Caryn) Norwell of Huron, Cathy (Justin) Cutcher of Huron; eight grandchildren, Jack, Scot, Tait, Owen, Cooper, Charles, Julianna and Zeke; and a brother, John (Mary) Norwell of Madison, Wis. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Evelyn Norwell.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron. There will be a private family Celebration of Life at a later date.

Fish Huron Ohio Walleye Challenge Sells Out

The 2014 Fish Huron Ohio Walleye Challenge will be held in Huron on October 4 and 5.  Yesterday was the opening of the official registration period for the tournament.  This tournament has become so popular that the registration period closed in less than 15 minutes because the official maximum of 100 teams was met. In monetary terms, this equates to $30,000.00 in registration fees being collected in less than 15 minutes.  Each of the 100 teams consists of anywhere from two to six members who will be spending several days in Huron for the tournament.  Huron City Manager, Andy White, stated “The impact to the city’s economic activity is expected to ripple throughout the 48 hour period as contestants lease docks, book hotel rooms, eat in local establishments and shop at local retailers.  This is a great example of positive development in the city.” 

Fish Huron Ohio is devoted to spreading the word regarding the fishing opportunities in the western basin of Lake Erie, and more specifically, in Huron.  Since its inception, Fish Huron Ohio has sponsored a variety of tournaments.  In 2013, the Fish Huron Ohio Walleye Challenge paid out a total of $29,650.  In addition, during the Friday night dinner & raffle over $7,000 was raised for charity.  The funds went to two different Wounded Warriors organizations and also to the Outreach Walleye Club.
