JILL A. (GIESE) BRYANT

Jill A. (Giese) Bryant, 46, of Huron, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, in her residence in Huron.

She was born June 3, 1968, in Cleveland, and was raised and lived in Huron. She graduated from Huron High School in 1986.  Jill enjoyed sharing time with her children and grandchildren the most. She liked to cook, enjoyed her 1970s music, and riding a motorcycle. She enjoyed her friends as company.

She is survived by two daughters, Kasey (Vincent Williams) Bryant of Huron, and Julie Bryant of Huron; her six grandchildren, Trayvon Williams, Trenten Williams, Tristin Williams, Isaiah Bryant, Josiah Bryant, Mariah Bryant; a sister, Candice Steinmetz of Huron; a brother, Shawn Giese of Humboldt, Texas; and her significant other, Craig Bryant of Huron.  She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Rose Giese.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the funeral home, with Rev. Tom Goossens officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

MARGARET HIGH MAHON

Margaret Mahon, Huron, passed away Feb. 14, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 15, 1948, the eighth child of Kathryn Mauter High and L. Kenneth High. She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and the University of Toledo. She was a CFP and had a varied career in the financial world with Merrill Lynch, Key Bank and LPL Financial Services.

Margaret is survived by her son, Patrick Joseph High, whom she adopted when he was two years old. Patrick will be ever grateful for the love, care, and the strong upbringing and values she gave him through the years, along with seven siblings, Carol (John) Luscombe, Jeanne Kinn, Janet (Kenneth) Woods, Mary Kathryn (Ron) Coss, John (Sue) High, Virginia Francis, and William (Kris) High; and 23 nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death were her parents; and brothers, Donald High and George High.

A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron. A graveside burial memorial will take place in Toledo, Saturday April 18.

MARIAN V. BLAND

Marian V. Bland, 90, of Huron, passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, in Parkvue Heath Care Center, Sandusky.

She was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa. She moved to Huron in 2006 from Sioux City.  Marian was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Huron, and enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, cooking, playing cards, and her dogs.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary (Steve) Kovalik of Huron, and Catherine (John) Larson of Dixon, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Darlington of Austin, Texas.  Marian was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Ethel (Winterfeld) Metz; and three brothers, Thomas, Richard, and Mark Metz.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb.11, until a mass at 11 a.m., at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron, with Rev. Jeffery McBeth officiating.  Burial will be in Sioux City at a later date.

BONNIE H. (BARTLETT) TAYLOR

Bonnie H. (Bartlett) Taylor, 59, of Huron, passed away after a brief illness Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, in Stein Hospice, Sandusky.

She was born July 4, 1955, and lived most of her life in Huron. She was a 1973 Huron High School graduate and attended Bauder Fashion College, of Miami, Fla. She was a proud Huron High School Band Parent and a “soccer mom."

Bonnie was self-employed and worked for several years with silk screening in her apparel shop and prior to that she worked in retail management.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Kerry; her daughter, Jennifer Taylor of Huron; son, Zachery Taylor of Huron; granddaughter, Taylor Casper; brothers, Derrick Bartlett of Huron, Stewart (Diane) Bartlett of Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Angus and Jennie Bartlett; and sister-in-law, Sara Bartlett.

Bonnie donated her remains to the University of Toledo, Department of Medicine.  A Celebration of Life will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Huron Eagles, 2902 Cleveland Road West, Huron.

Added Sugar- Public Enemy No. 1?*

         

Every few years, the medical community releases a new study that pinpoints something we are doing or eating that is adversely affecting our health.  The latest culprit that has attracted the attention of the medical community is sugar, particularly added sugar.  Astonishingly, the average American consumes ~130 pounds of sugar per year.  In contrast, the average American in 1800 consumed five pounds of sugar per year.  The United States Department of Agriculture advises adults who eat a 2,000-calorie diet to limit sugar intake to about 40 grams (10 teaspoons) of added sugar per day.  As a point of reference, a 12-ounce can of soda contains about 39 grams of sugar.  Soda is an obvious source of added sugar, but sweeteners can also be found in other, less suspect foods like peanut butter and bread.  In addition, liquid sweeteners, such as high-fructose corn syrup, are processed by our bodies differently than other sugars.  Further, high-fructose corn syrup lacks any fiber, a component which slows sugar absorption by our bodies.  In contrast, consumption of fruit includes the natural sugar, but also the associated fiber.  Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, believes the consumption of added sugars has caused America’s current public health crisis.  Dr. Lustig goes so far as to label sugar as toxic.

            According to Dr. Lustig and findings from other recent studies, the adverse effects on our health of over consumption of sugar are numerous.  The most obvious effects are obesity, type II diabetes, and tooth decay.  Beyond these, the other harmful effects of sugar are astounding and somewhat unexpected.  First, sugar affects our skin by causing the skin to lose the plump, elastic qualities that underlie a youthful appearance.  Further, sugar reduces the quality of collagen in the skin.  Excess sugar suppresses the immune system by reducing the ability of white blood cells to recognize and attack bacteria and viruses.  Sugar has also been linked to heart disease.  According to an extensive study by Kimber Stanhope, a nutritional biologist at the University of California, Davis, there is strong evidence linking excess high fructose corn syrup consumption to an increase in risk factors for heart disease and stroke.  Further, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health recently released a study in which they found that men who drink one sugar-sweetened beverage (e.g., regular soda, sports drinks, etc.) daily have a 20% higher risk of coronary heart disease than men who drink none.  A similar study in published in 2009, found that women who consumed one to two sugary drinks per day had a 23% increased risk of a heart attack.  Other studies have found links between certain types of cancers and sugar.  According to Dr. Lewis Cantley of Harvard Medical School, “nearly a third of some common cancers- including breast and colon cancers- have something called insulin receptors on their surface.  Insulin binds to these receptors and signals the tumor to start consuming glucose.”  These adverse effects are just the tip of the iceberg.  For a list of 146 reasons why sugar is ruining your health, go to www.rheumatic.org/sugar.htm.

WALTER B. BUTKUS

Oct 5, 1961 - Nov 25, 2014

Walter B. Butkus, 53, of Huron, passed suddenly into eternal peace on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014.

He was born Oct. 5, 1961, in Bellevue, N.J., and graduated from Huron High School in 1980 and from BGSU in 1989.  He was employed by Radisson Hotel, DeLuca Plumbing and was an Erie County licensed plumber.

His passion for fishing nicknamed him “Walleye Walt” as he traveled to the Lake Erie Islands in his boat, “Shipshape.” He will be remembered by his warm smile and storytelling.

Walter B. Butkus is the son of Walter and Barbara Butkus and the brother of Dana of Whippany, N.J., and Bryce of Palos Verdes, Calif.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Foster Funeral Home and Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron. Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec., 3, at St. Peter Catholic Church.  The Rev. EDWARD J. ROMAY

Edward J. Romay, of Huron, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014.  

Born in Toledo in 1921, Edward attended Ohio State University before joining the Army Corps of Engineers in 1941. After 3½ years of active duty and an honorable discharge as a captain, he returned to complete his degree in chemical engineering.  Soon afterward, he embarked on a long and successful career. He worked as a research chemist with Plaskon in Toledo, earning several patents. Most notable was one for resins that make paper strong while wet, leading to the invention of paper towels for widespread home and industrial use. Edward co-founded Resi-Chem Corporation in 1953, which manufactured resins at five plants nationwide. From there, he moved on to the Glidden Company, which brought him to Huron as manager of the local resin plant from 1965-68. The final stage of his career was spent as corporate vice president for their parent company, SCM, until his retirement in 1983.

Edward was active in local civic affairs, volunteering his time on the Huron school board, the Firelands Bank board of directors and as a member of St. Peter Catholic parish, Huron.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Faye, and their three children, Sandy Palmer of Huron, Kathy O’Byrne of Glendale, Calif., and Bill Romay of Valencia, Calif.; as well as five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Beverly Bishop of Toledo.

LISA MARIE OWENS

Mar 31, 1964 - Nov 28, 2014

Lisa Marie Owens, 50, of Huron, succumbed to cancer early Friday morning, Nov. 28, 2014, in Sandusky.

Lisa was born March 31, 1964, in Sandusky, daughter of John W. and Nancy J. (Knerr) Bettridge.  Lisa was a 1982 graduate of Bellevue High School, where she played volleyball. Lisa also attended the Terra Tech School of Business. Lisa was a lover of movies, music and swimming. She spent many an afternoon and evening curled up with a good book, accompanied by her cherished feline companion, Annie. Annie cat will be retiring in style with a very special someone from Lisa’s life.

Lisa is survived by her beloved daughter, Jessica A. (Eli) Wiswell; mother, Nancy J. (Knerr) Bettridge; sister, Leslie (Bettridge) (Jeff) Grashel; and a nephew.  She was preceded in death by her father, John W. Bettridge.

Friends and loved ones will be received from noon until the funeral service begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue.  Memorial contributions may be made to Erie County Humane Society.

E. THOMAS ‘TOM’ ALEXANDER

E. Thomas "Tom" Alexander, 81, residing in Huron, went home to be with his Lord on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2014, from Firelands Regional Medical Center after a prolonged illness.

Tom was born Oct. 25, 1933, in Sandusky to Estel and Gertie (Wells) Alexander.  Tom graduated from Sandusky High School in 1951. In 1961 he built his home in Huron Township and has resided there since. Tom retired from Ford Motor Co. in Sandusky in 1995 after 38 years as a millwright. He was a member of UAW Local 1216.

Tom was raised in Calvary Baptist Church in Sandusky, where he served as a deacon for many years, was a choir member, sang in duets and quartets, taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School superintendent and church treasurer, drove the church bus for youth events and chaired the building committee that constructed the current building on East Perkins Avenue in 1970. In his spare time, he enjoyed perch and walleye fishing, boating, water skiing, gardening, photography, carpentry work, bowling, playing Rook and Uno, and forwarding emails.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mildred A. "Millie" (Holliday) Alexander, whom he married June 5, 1954; two sons, the Rev. Thomas D. (Rachael) Alexander of Wellington, Ohio, and the Rev. James L. (Pam) Alexander of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Cheryl A. (Dr. Michael) Eiras of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.  In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by one infant son, Donald L. Alexander.

DONALD E. HAMER

Donald E. Hamer, 78, of Huron, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, in his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 4, 1936, in Sandusky, was a 1954 graduate of Greenwich High School and was a graduate of the Toledo Barber College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a barber in Sandusky for over 10 years and retired from Ford Motor Co., where he oversaw both the power house and garage. He also taught a Stationary Engineering class at EHOVE.

Don was a devoted member of his church and masonic lodge. He was a member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ in Sandusky; a past member and Past Master of the former Greenwich Lodge No. 543 F. & A.M.; a member and Past Master of Perseverance Lodge No. 329 F. & A.M.; a 56-year Free and Accepted Mason; a member and Past High Priest of Sandusky City Chapter No. 72 R.A.M.; a 55-year Royal Arch Mason; a Past District Deputy of the 9th Capitular District, Royal Arch Masons of Ohio; a member and Past Illustrious Master, and Recorder of Sandusky City Council No. 26 R. & S.M.; a member and Past Commander of Erie Commandery No. 23 Knights Templar; a member and Past Eminent Prior of Ohio Priory No. 18 Knights of the York Cross of Honor; a member of Singara Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R.; a past Demolay advisor and holder of the Demolay Legion of Honor; a 32^nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo; and was a member of numerous other Masonic organizations.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, the former Diane Crum; four daughters, Tammy "Kevin" Didion of Huron, Melissa "Norm" Myers of Wilmington, Ill., Holly "Ben" Butler of Severn, Md., and Marta "John" Winkler of Bay Village, OH; one son, Mike "Anna" Hamer of Green Springs; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Roger "Janet" Hamer of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Freda Hamer; his first wife, Ruth Ann (McLaughlin) Hamer, in 1968; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Crum.

TIMOTHY M. GREULICH

Timothy M. Greulich, 60, residing in Huron, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, in Firelands Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.  

Timothy was born Aug. 6, 1954, in Sandusky to Richard Greulich and Natalie (Raab) Greulich Green.  Timothy graduated from Sandusky High School and was employed at Sawmill Creek Resort Golf Course for over 30 years. He had a lifelong passion for fishing.

Timothy is survived by his sisters, Ruth Ann (Troy) Tackett of Sandusky, Mary Ann Rapp of Bristol, Tenn., and Debbie (Kelly) VanMetter of Quinland, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents, Timothy was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Greulich.

Private family burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. RUTH WHITING BOYER

Ruth Whiting Boyer, 79, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky. 

She was born Aug. 7, 1935, in Albany, N.Y. to the late Dana F. and Miriam (Baker) Whiting and came to the Huron area in 1961 from St. Clair Shores, Mich.

Ruth was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church in Berlin Heights, where she was a member of the Bible Study group, and a former member of the Huron Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the board of directors of Erie Residential Living Inc. in Sandusky and was a former volunteer bookkeeper for Habitat for Humanity. Ruth was also a member of the former Huron Swim Club and the Towne and Country Players in Norwalk. She was the office manager for Sandusky Internists for 22 years.  Ruth enjoyed the lake view of her home, cooking, and raising her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard E. Boyer of Huron; by her children, Susan Bates of Berea, Ohio, Cindy (Jack) Cramer of Bluffton, Ohio, Bryan (Eugenia) Boyer of Holland, Ohio, Bruce (Beth) Boyer of Columbia, Mo., and Douglas (Bobbie) Boyer of Clyde; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Dana C. Whiting.

Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main St., Huron. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Lakeview United Methodist Church, 6 South Street, Berlin Heights. Interment will be in Scott Cemetery.
