Saturday's strong winds made Lake Erie dangerous for small watercraft. Photo by Gretchen Blackwell. |
This
past week, Huron was buzzing with activity as anglers from around the Midwest
arrived in Huron ready to take part in the Fish Huron Ohio Walleye
Challenge. The fishing tournament was to
have taken place this past Saturday and Sunday with 106 teams, each consisting
of three to four members, vying for the top prize.
Unfortunately,
Lake Erie is unpredictable this time of year, and the tournament had to be
cancelled. Saturday was declared a “Blow
Day”, and there was hope that the conditions on Sunday would improve. Nonetheless, the large waves, cold
temperatures, gusty winds, and chance of water spouts made the conditions on
both Saturday and Sunday too dangerous to risk heading out on the lake.
The
$28,450 in prize money that was intended to be awarded for the best catch and a
variety of other categories was distributed via a random drawing. In addition, over $10,000 will be donated to
charity as a result of the Charity Raffle Dinner which was held Friday evening
at Mesenberg’s.
Though
Lake Erie was the victor in this year’s walleye challenge, it is always better
to respect our inland sea and heed her warning signs. There is always next year!
