News from St. Peter School

From St. Peter School

We are excited to announce our new logo.  On Thursday September 18, 2014, St. Peter School unveiled a new school logo.  The new crest was designed from several symbols previously used.  The logo is a round design with a crest in the middle.  The crest is divided into four quadrants.  The fisherman’s net in the bottom two quadrants represents St. Peter being the fisher of men.  The fish in the upper left quadrant is an early Christian symbol.  In the upper right quadrant, the keys represent the “the keys to the kingdom of heaven.”  The logo also includes the name of the school and establishment in 1952 around the crest.

The logo was presented to the student body at a launch ceremony on Thursday September 18.  Each student was given a zipper pull with the logo.  In addition, St Peter School has launched a new website at huronstpeterschool.org.  The web site has the new logo and updated information about the school.

The Future of Main Street

After living in Huron for 17 years, I have truly come to appreciate this quaint, small town.  Nonetheless, I have always yearned for a Norman Rockwell-like Main Street that teamed with retail shops, bakeries, and coffee shops.   As I travel to different small towns in Ohio, I am envious of their Main Street district and sad that Huron lost its commercial district many years ago.

As a result of Urban Renewal, which began in Huron in 1965, the “old” Huron was dismantled and the boat basin became the focal point of the downtown, leaving North Main Street disjointed.  In the City’s new master plan, entitled Vision 2020, one of the goals is to reconnect Main Street and establish a thriving business district.  Though great plans often take time to come to fruition, our City officials are well on their way towards achieving this goal.  Initially, the plan was to first re-connect Main Street and then make improvements along the whole of the northern part of the street.  However, negotiations for acquiring the property that would allow Main Street to once again be a contiguous stretch have taken longer than anticipated.  In addition, because the section that will be the connector between the two parts of North Main Street is not currently an existing road, the City was not able to apply for grant money for the necessary improvements.  According to City Manager, Andy White, the City has received $500,000 in grants for improvements to the existing parts which will include new signage and landscaping.  Work on these projects will begin in the spring of 2015.  By 2016, these projects and the connection will be completed.

In an effort to supplement future development along the newly-established Main Street, the City plans to replace the two existing pavilions near the boat basin building with one 3-season building.  By the end of 2017, the City will have the Showboat property reconstructed, and this and other parcels along Main Street will be ready for development.  White stated “We are putting out a lot of investment proactively in anticipation of development.”  Finally, the City is in the process of updating their zoning codes so future and existing development will be in line with the City’s Master Plan.

Have a look at the City’s master plan (http://cityofhuron.org/files/2012-council/strategic-plan.pdf) and the architectural renderings.  Certainly, one cannot go back to what was, but the potential for rebuilding the small-town commercial component of Huron is well on track to becoming a reality.

Stone Deliveries

A tug, owned by Durocher Marine, a division of Kokosing
Construction, enters the Huron River
Inevitably, most Huron residents have seen a steady stream of trucks rolling through town carrying large boulders.  There have been many questions and speculations about what is actually happening with these stones.

Earlier this year, the United States Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District put out a call seeking interested firms capable of breakwater repair work in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland East breakwater is located in Lake Erie near the entrance to Cleveland Harbor.  Apparently, the breakwater was already in disrepair when Superstorm Sandy arrived in October 2012 and caused additional damage.  The project was awarded to the Durocher Marine Division of Kokosing Construction, Inc., which is based in Cheboygan, Michigan.

Kokosing is currently quarrying the required stone in Woodville, Ohio, transporting it to Huron via truck, and unloading it at Huron’s ore dock.  The stone is then loaded on barges and pushed to Cleveland with a tug boat.  The trucks make several deliveries of boulders to Huron each day.   In fact, there are, on average, 16 trucks and each makes three runs per day picking up and delivering their cargo.  Hence, Huron is simply a conduit through which the stone passes.  There is no financial benefit to the City for this project.  Interestingly, it is more cost-effective for Kokosing to deliver the stone to Huron and then transport it to Cleveland by water than it is to drive the stone to Cleveland.  The project, which in its entirety will take four to five months, will likely continue through October.

Franklin D. Halley

Franklin David Halley (“Frank”), age 86, entered into God’s eternal presence on September 8, 2014.  A long-time resident of Huron, Frank was born in Ironton, Ohio on November 4, 1927, the son of Louis and Helen Halley and the brother of Louie.  He is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Marilyn (nee Weller), sons Jay (Annette) and Phil (Ellen), and daughter, Nan Halley Steyn; nine grandchildren: Meghan (Georgi) Halley, Beth (Taylor) Finseth, Laura Halley, Daniel Halley, Matthew Halley, Alastair (“Sudzy”) Steyn, Anna Halley, Trevor Steyn, and Patrick Steyn; and one great-granddaughter, Gabriella Elena Dakovski.

Frank grew up in Upper Arlington, Ohio and had an exciting boyhood.  At age 14, he won the Columbus Soap Box Derby, after which he competed in the national championship in Akron.  After graduating high school in 1945, he joined the U.S. Army, with honorable discharge in 1947. After his stint in the military, Frank attended The Ohio State University, where he majored in education, was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, and, most importantly, met the love of his life, Marilyn.
Frank and Marilyn were married at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on the campus of Ohio State in 1948.  After graduation, Frank and Marilyn moved to Castalia, Ohio to teach school and ultimately to Huron to do the same.  Frank taught history at Huron High School for a number of years, during which he obtained his master’s degree in education from Kent State University.  He then worked as an administrator in the Huron schools until moving his family to East Lansing in 1968 to pursue a further education degree at Michigan State University.

Frank returned to Huron to serve as an administrator at EHOVE for many years, after which he served as the Director of Continuing Education at Providence Hospital until his retirement in 1994.  He also taught education courses at what is now Firelands College and later served on its board of trustees.
Next to his love for family and friends, Frank’s great passion was Ohio State.  He was an active member and former president of the Erie County chapter of the OSU Alumni Association. In 1973 Frank designed the original Block “O” flag, which is now flown by proud Ohio State fans everywhere. There are many people, both friends and strangers, who were delighted to receive a buckeye from Frank when he saw them wearing Ohio State gear.  No one was a bigger Buckeye fan than Frank.

Frank worshipped at The Chapel (4444 Galloway Rd, Sandusky), where visitation will be from 3 until 6 on Thursday, September 11, with a memorial service to follow.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Providence Care Center, 2025 Hayes Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.  Online condolences may be shared at www.fosterfh.com

It’s Hunting Season

Kyle and Matt from Vermilion enjoyed this
beautiful Sunday hunting in Huron
If you have awoken to the sound of gunshots lately, it is not because there is a rash of crimes in Huron.  Hunting season is upon us, and hunting is legal within Huron City limits at the Spoil Site at the mouth of the Huron River.  September 1 marked the beginning of the early season for Canada geese and mourning doves, and September 6 was the beginning of the teal season. (Teal are a small duck.)  All hunters must be licensed and must use non-toxic shot.  Hunting is permitted from sunrise to sunset.  When walking on the pier over the next few weeks, please be aware that hunters likely will be present in the vicinity.  If you are interested in learning more about hunting regulations in Ohio, visit the Ohio Division of Wildlife at http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/wildlife-home/post/migratory-bird-and-waterfowl-seasons.
