Son and Father Photo Exhibit at Huron Public Library

Photographer Brian J. Smith will share his photo exhibit with poet Larry Smith during the month of August at the Huron Public Library.

The two men have created a strong collection of photo-poems, as well as landscape photography. The senior Smith is the former Poet Laureate of Huron and a well published poet and professor emeritus of Firelands College of Bowling Green State University. The younger Smith is a graduate of Kent State and Akron University of Law and is a lawyer with the area’s Sivinski Law Offices. Both are long time residents of Huron, Ohio.

Larry Smith states, “I have been so impressed with Brian’s work as a photographer that I asked if I might place short poem responses within the context of his art work. He agreed, and we have done 20 or so combined works called photo-poems. Seven will be on exhibit.”

The main exhibit includes 12 large landscape photographs by Brian Smith of the area’s fields, old houses, nature, and shoreline in summer and winter seasons. They are part of a much larger collection. The exhibit during the month of August is free and open to the public. Some of the photos may be seen online at the web page http://smithdocs.net/bjsphotography and on Smith’s Flickr pages at https://www.flickr.com/photos/b_smith .

Food for Fines at the Huron Public Library, etc.

This week, November 16 - 22, is a Food for Fines amnesty week at the Huron Public Library (HPL). Residents can trade non-perishable food items for their current or past due library fines on HPL items and not on items borrowed from other libraries through Clevnet. Missing and lost items cannot for forgiven. All food donations will be forwarded to the Huron Food Pantry, where it is a very busy time of year with the upcoming holidays. Some suggested items that are in great need at the Food Pantry include cereal, macaroni & cheese, hearty soups, baking supplies, canned fruit, jelly, and canned meats.  Let's try to fill the shopping cart in the library!

The HPL's annual Holiday Open House will be held on Sunday, December 7th from 2pm - 4pm. The library will be hosting two performances by Children's performer Tom Phoolery and his show, "Christmas AbraKIDabra". For adults and older students, we have the Firelands String Quartet and performances from Caryl Crane Youth Theatre's production of "I'm Dreaming of a Broadway Christmas".  Also scheduled will be a kid's craft, face painting, a visit from Santa Claus, multiple holiday trees, refreshments, and more. The entire community is invited to attend, to celebrate the beginning of the Holiday season at the library with the Library Board of Trustees and staff.

Friends of the Huron Public Library to Hold Book Sale

From Nancy Smith, President of the Friends of the Huron Public Library

The Friends of the Huron Public Library's book sale will be held at the library September 5, 6, and 7 from 9-4, 9-4, and 1-4 respectively. There will be a small table of books at the Boat Basin on Garage Sale, Saturday, also. Used books, CDs and DVDs will be for sale. Sunday will be the $3 Bag Day, but come early for the best selection. For the first time ever, the Friends will be able to take credit cards for the sale.

The Friends of the Huron Public Library is a volunteer organization that supports the library and its programs. One hundred percent of the money raised from dues (a mere 3 cents a day or .$ 10.00 a year) and the book sales go directly to the library. Membership forms are available in the library. We also have Business Friends of the Library who support the library as well.

Books can be donated all year round for the sales, and there is a book cart in the library throughout the year that also has some books for sale as well.
