Friends of the Huron Public Library to Hold Book Sale

From Nancy Smith, President of the Friends of the Huron Public Library

The Friends of the Huron Public Library's book sale will be held at the library September 5, 6, and 7 from 9-4, 9-4, and 1-4 respectively. There will be a small table of books at the Boat Basin on Garage Sale, Saturday, also. Used books, CDs and DVDs will be for sale. Sunday will be the $3 Bag Day, but come early for the best selection. For the first time ever, the Friends will be able to take credit cards for the sale.

The Friends of the Huron Public Library is a volunteer organization that supports the library and its programs. One hundred percent of the money raised from dues (a mere 3 cents a day or .$ 10.00 a year) and the book sales go directly to the library. Membership forms are available in the library. We also have Business Friends of the Library who support the library as well.

Books can be donated all year round for the sales, and there is a book cart in the library throughout the year that also has some books for sale as well.

Huron to Cleveland on the Jet Express

Do you enjoy visiting Cleveland but do not like the drive or trying to find parking? On Sunday, September 14, you can travel to Cleveland via boat.  The Jet Express, operated by the Lorain Port Authority, will be offering a special trip from Huron to Cleveland for the Cleveland Browns-New Orleans Saints game.  The boat will depart from the Huron Boat Basin at 9:00 AM and leave Cleveland shortly after the football game ends.  If you are not interested in the football game but want to see the sights in Cleveland, you are welcome to do that instead.  The round-trip fare for the Jet Express is $35 for adults, $5 for children 6-11, and free for children 5 and under.  For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.lorainportauthority.com/jet_express.

Victory Day Comes to Huron

Victory Day comes to Kalahari Field at Huron Memorial Stadium. The Huron High School and St. Mary’s Central Catholic varsity football teams , cheerleaders and marching bands are co-hosting a special event for children with severe learning and physical disabilities. Victory Day provides children the opportunity to play football, cheer on the squad or march with the band while their parents, family members and teachers witness the realization of a dream come true for their child or friend.

Participants will be partnered with a Huron High School or St. Mary’s football player or cheerleader who will serve as their mentor for the day. Each child is provided with a full game day experience and given an opportunity to run or catch a pass for a touchdown.

Victory Day, founded in 2010 by Riverview Michigan native Aaron Segedi, is a program designed to build character in future leaders through volunteerism and mentorship. It will be an afternoon of education, inspiration and fun on the gridiron for cognitively and physically impaired children in the Sandusky/Huron area, stated Huron Head Football Coach Tony Legando.

Several area businesses are sponsoring the event and purchasing medals for all participants. Victory Day will be held at Huron Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 6th  from 4-5:30. Although the event is free to the public, the donation of a canned food item is encouraged.  All donations will go to the Victory Kitchen Food Pantry.
