When The Weather Channel Came to Town

By Hannah Blackwell

Football, the great American pastime, has brought our small town together on Friday nights for decades.  The boys that make up the Huron High School Football Team put hard work and dedication into the sport so that they can continue to make Huron proud.  Yet, who would have guessed that the team’s success and our little piece of paradise on the lake could catch the attention of Senior Producer of special projects for The Weather Channel, Mike Jenkins?  Early this week, Huron High School Athletic Director, Steve Camella, was notified that The Weather Channel was working on a segment called “12 Weeks, 12 Towns” and that they wanted to include Huron in the mix.  Jenkins and a camera crew of one rolled into town late Thursday afternoon to catch the Thursday night football practice with a drone camera.  They were also able to capture footage of the team members putting the “H” on their helmets for Friday night’s big game.  The segment for which Jenkins is traveling across the country is not just about small-town football programs, but about “getting into Middle America and telling the stories so the rest of America knows what you have; your hidden jewel.”  Huron was picked for the segment purely based on research with keywords such as “small town,” “community,” and “football.”  Jenkins and his team wanted to capture what makes Huron such a great place in the three-minute segment that will air throughout the day on The Weather Channel on Friday, September 5.  He explained that the segment “is not about the Friday nights; it’s about what the Friday nights mean to the community.”  Huron has something special, and this will be broadcast to the world next Friday.

The Wickersham Brothers, the Sour Kangaroo,
And all of the Who’s play a major role too!
And of course we can’t have a big show like that
Without our emcee – the Cat in the Hat!

Why we’ll even take you to McElligot’s Pool!
Fun for all ages and sizes and kinds
With big imaginations and open-upped minds!

Caryl Crane Youth Theatre at BGSU Firelands College opens it’s 2014-2015 with the family musical,
Seussical! From Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the team who created Once on This Island, comes a
new and whimsical musical that weaves together Dr. Seuss’s most famous tales. Seuss’s stories have taught
tolerance, peace, and the value of dignity to generations of kids — that “a person’s a person, no matter how
small” — in fun and captivating ways. A heart warming kid-friendly story that also won't insult an adult's
intelligence, Seussical is the show for adults and children alike. Rated G.

The Shoreline Showdown

Huron Memorial Stadium will be the site of the 1st “Shoreline Showdown” this Friday evening.  The Sandusky Blue Streaks will travel east to take on their lakefront neighbors, the Huron Tigers, in the first meeting of these teams in 100 years.  In his anthology entitled, Huron Football: Volume 1, A History of Huron, Ohio’s Football Program 1939-1979, Dave Brown states that Huron and Sandusky last met in football in 1914.  The outcome was not too good for Huron- a 98-0 loss for the Tigers.

Huron’s Athletic Director, Steve Camella, has been working on bringing these two teams together for about two years.  Camella explained that Sandusky’s enrollment is down, making the school a more comparable rival for Huron.  Since the schools are in close proximity to each other and both towns are on the lakeshore, Camella dubbed the game, the “Shoreline Showdown”.  This will be the first game of the season for both teams which, historically, is a difficult game to draw crowds.  Both schools hope this burgeoning rivalry will bring spectators out to watch the teams play.  Sandusky and Huron have committed to beginning their football seasons playing each other for the next two years, thus continuing the Shoreline Showdown.

Camella is hopeful that this will be the start of a wonderful, new tradition.  “I am looking forward to a competitive and entertaining game.” he stated.  The game will begin at 7 PM, and gates open at 5:30 PM.  Pre-sale tickets are available at the high school until the end of the school day on Friday.  The forecast looks great for Friday evening, so get out and support your Huron Tigers!

Huron City Schools- Off to a Running Start

From Superintendent, Denny Muratori-

Huron had a fantastic opening week. Students were genuinely excited to return.
Enrollment = 1,467. This includes 44 attending EHOVE and 49 pre-K. The district welcomed several new residents and their children to Huron over the summer. We have one student on an open enrollment waiting list. Currently we have 88 open enrolled students in the district.
Enrollment numbers change frequently due to students moving in or out.

This year, the district is partnering with NASA. For no charge a representative from NASA is providing intensive professional development preparing our teachers to provide project based learning activities that are aligned with 21st century learning skills. This working relationship is generally reserved for larger districts, who are currently collaborating, such as Minneapolis and Cincinnati.

This district is hosting a Community Engagement session on Wednesday, August 27th from 6-7 PM at McCormick auditorium. The session is to provide a levy update. Levy updates and information will be shared at Citizens for Huron Schools Facebook page.

The District will seek the renewal of an Emergency Operating Levy on Nov. 4th. The levy is a renewal therefore, NO additional cost to tax payers.

Huron High School is hosting the Sandusky Blue Streaks Friday, August 29th in the first annual Shoreline Showdown varsity football game.

Citizens for Huron Schools Levy Committee is hosting a spaghetti dinner fund raiser on Friday, September 26th 4:30 -7 PM in the high school cafe.

The District would like to thank the several hundred parents, student and supporters who joined us at the first annual Back to School celebration on Thursday, August 14th.

We encourage families and district supporters to visit our new website: www.Huronhs.com or the Huron City Schools Facebook page for frequent district updates.

Huron’s Farmer’s Market

The residents of Huron are fortunate to have a weekly farmer’s market.  Each week, we are given the opportunity to purchase fresh produce from the farmers themselves.  It is easy to plan your meals around what is in season.  Today’s offerings included lovely tomatoes, peppers, apples, nectarines, beans, eggplant, potatoes and much more.  In addition, the Huron Public Library has food-related books that are available to be checked out.  Take some time to talk to the people who grow the food you are about to consume.  They might just convince you to try something unexpected or provide you with a recipe.  The farmer’s market, which is held on Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 PM at the Boat Basin parking lot, will continue until October 23.

Here is a great recipe for eggplant in case you were considering purchasing a purple beauty or have some in your own garden! http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/eggplant-goat-cheese-sandwiches-10000001924697/

Meet Brian Kucbel, Principal of Shawnee Elementary School

Following the unfortunate and untimely death earlier this year of former Shawnee Elementary School principal, Tanny Vonthron, the Huron Board of Education put out a call for applications for a new principal.  Little did they know that the most qualified and most enthusiastic candidate was already within their midst.  The Board hired 8th grade science teacher, Brian Kucbel, to fill the vacancy at Shawnee.
Brian Kucbel, a native of Amherst, Ohio, has been a teacher in the Huron City Schools since 2008.  In addition to teaching 8th grade science, Mr. Kucbel has also served as the Junior High cross country coach.  He cherished both of these positions.  Two years ago, Mr. Kucbel completed his Masters in Education with an added administration degree, thus making him qualified for his new position as principal.  Despite having his advanced degrees, Mr. Kucbel had no intention of leaving Huron.  “I had always told myself I am not going to just leave to be a principal somewhere.  I want to be in a district that is great.  My dream was to be in Huron, and I never anticipated the unfortunate circumstances, but when this position opened up and I had the opportunity, I was very anxious and wanting to advance professionally in Huron.” he explained.
Mr. Kucbel knows that he has some very large shoes to fill in his new position; yet, he is up to the challenge.  He exclaimed “I am happy those shoes are big to fill- it just makes me more driven and makes me set my aspirations and goals higher.  At the same time, I am trying maybe not to fill somebody’s shoes but continue what Tanny did and take her footsteps and her shoes and move them along with me and continue what she was building here and will continue to build here because things that she had instilled in this culture and environment are still going to continue.  I think it is very important that we keep this alive and well in this building and continue on with my vision and the way I would like to see the culture.  I am excited!”  Though Ms. Vonthron’s signature yellow smiley faces will no longer play a prominent role at Shawnee, day-to-day operations will remain the same.  Yet in the same spirit of the smiley faces, Mr. Kucbel will be implementing a program that rewards positive behavior and gives the students incentives for doing so.  He wants to be very visible to students and will be out in the hallways as much as possible and interacting with students.
Despite his excitement for his new position, Mr. Kucbel is truly going to miss being in the classroom and coaching cross country.  “I am going to miss looking at a student’s face and knowing that you taught him something- that aha moment.  I really care about making the students good people and making them believe in themselves.  That was the one thing that I think that I got out of coaching and teaching.”  However, Mr. Kucbel optimistically stated “In this position, I have an opportunity to make a more holistic impact and impact more lives.  I am not in this profession for the money- I am in it to make a difference in someone’s life.  That has a much more lasting impact than money and anything like that.  When you change someone’s life for the better, it is a chain reaction for the better, paying it forward.”
In closing, Mr. Kucbel declared “I am very excited about the upcoming year, about working with the community and staff and students at Shawnee.  I am very honored to have this position, and it is one that I will cherish.  Hopefully, I will continue the excellent tradition that has been established in this environment.”

Fall Sports Preview: Cross Country

From Coach Roger Blevins:

The Huron boys and girls cross country teams have been working hard all summer in preparation for the upcoming season.  There are fourteen boys and twenty girls out this year.  The boys cross country team has a mix of veteran runners and untested talent.  The team will be led this year by seniors Graham Mast,  Nick Lachowyn, and Ryan Opfer.  Returning junior Shane Thatcher is continuing his development as a runner and we expect to see great things from him.  In addition, we have added several talented freshman to the team with Nathan Pack and Ronnie Brandal consistently pushing our upper class runners in practice.  It will be exciting to see how all the young men come together to compete this year against conference competition.  Our strengths will be our experienced juniors and seniors.   We do however, have some talented underclassmen who will be asked to shoulder more weight than is typical for young runners.

On the girls team, this years ladies cross country team will be led by seniors Madi Mize (former regional qualifier), Allison Litz, and Samantha Hebert.  We've added eight freshmen to the team and several new sophomores and juniors.  Returning sophomores Jenna Burrier and Sarah Neibler add depth and additional high level racing experience.  Many of our young runners are very promising but at this time untested.  As coaches, we're very excited to see how this young team comes together to compete in an always-competitive SBC conference.

Note: The Huron Cross Country team will begin their season next Saturday, August 23, at the Tiger Classic at Seneca East High School in Attica, Ohio.

Five Easy & Healthy Kid Snack Ideas*

From Elite Wellness Group

If you are like us, then you are always on the lookout for healthy snack or meal ideas for your kids.  With school beginning in about a week, these ideas might replace those expensive and unhealthy pre-packaged lunch options.  Here are five quick, easy, affordable, and healthy snack ideas that we love.

We like to make wraps without the bread.  We call them roll-ups.  Trader Joes has a healthy Chia seed wrap that is great for introducing some variety.  Sneak in lettuce, tomatoes or grated carrots to help get your children to eat their veggies.  If you slice the lettuce really thin, they might not pick it out!

Greek yogurt poured over fruit can be a quick & healthy dessert.

Slicing up an apple, adding almond or peanut butter with some blueberries is a tasty treat for anyone in your family.  We like to mix cinnamon in with the peanut butter for more flavor.  Lemon squeezed on the apple helps prevent browning if you are packing this to go.

Organic strawberries with some almond slivers for ears, chia seeds for eyes and healthy fruit roll up for a tail is fun to make together if you have extra time.

For a great summertime snack, pour lemonade and frozen fruit together in a popsicle mold to create
homemade & healthy popsicles.  We purchased our BPA-free molds from TJ Maxx for around $6.00.

Taking children shopping to find healthy items to pack might prove challenging.  Challenge them to find five healthy things in the grocery store they would really like to eat.  Have a healthy day!

Huron High School Students Take Part in Teen Advisory Board

Huron students serving as members of the Ohio Teen Advisory
Board (l to r)- Monika Giardina, Hannah Blackwell, Michael Delahunt,
Lisa Gies, and Madi Mize.  Not pictured- Samantha Hebert.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office recently formed their inaugural Teen Advisory Board. The purpose of this new board is primarily to engage Ohio’s young people in the processes of government and law. Earlier this year, applications for the board were accepted from students who would be high school juniors or seniors during the 2014-2015 school year. Once selected, board members are required to serve a one-year term and convene in Columbus twice during their term.

For this first year, there were 174 applicants, all of whom were asked to serve on the Teen Advisory Board. Of these 174 board members, six members are students at Huron High School. These students include juniors, Hannah Blackwell and Lisa Gies, and seniors, Michael Delahunt, Samantha Hebert, Madi Mize, and Monika Giardina. Due to the large number of students involved, the Teen Advisory Board was split into two groups. One of the groups met in Columbus on Tuesday, August 5 and the other on Wednesday, August 6. The agenda for these meetings included a tour of the Ohio Attorney General’s office, the Ohio Statehouse, and the Ohio Supreme Court. In addition, staffers from the Attorney General’s office lead a forum for members where they discussed issues affecting teens. There were also presentations by a variety of government employees.

The next meeting of the Teen Advisory Board will occur after the holidays. During that time, the board members will participate in a more focused work session to discuss issues related to teens in Ohio such as school safety, the heroin epidemic, and teen consumer protection issues. Ultimately, the Ohio Attorney General’s office “envisions members working with various service divisions within our office and providing ongoing and direct input on policies and practices that may affect young people in Ohio.”

Father and Daughter Teams from Huron Participate in Pedal to the Point

Huron Riders-Phil & Lilly Engeler and Joe & Sophie Dandurand
This past Saturday, Huron residents, Phil and Lilly Engeler and Joe and Sophie Dandurand, set out on their bikes to make a difference.  The father and daughter duos, dubbed Huron Riders, participated in the Ohio Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society’s Pedal to the Point.  The 65-mile ride began in Brunswick, Ohio, and, for the Huron Riders, ended in Huron.  The ride took four hours to complete due to the driving rains that occurred on Saturday morning.  This adventure was not too taxing for Phil and Joe who are both seasoned long-distance riders, but for Lilly and Sophie, it was by far the longest bike ride they had ever taken.  Neither of the girls had ever ridden more than 17 miles at any given time.  Joe declared that “the girls were troopers.”  Phil stated “It rained hard that day- so much so that they thought it was hailing, but they kept going.  They did not even walk up any hills!”
Phil and Lilly participated in the ride to honor Huron resident, Roxanne Wechter, who has MS and several of their other family members who also have or have had MS.  According to the National MS Society’s website, “Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling, disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.  Millions of people are affected by MS and the challenges of living with its unpredictable symptoms, which range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.  The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted.”

Huron Riders are still accepting donations.  All funds raised remain in Ohio to help Ohio residents who are suffering with MS.  Donations can be made online at www.msohiobike.org or by mailing a check made out to the MS Society to the Dandurands at 335 Center Street, Huron.  Ultimately, the ride “was a great experience for a great cause” exclaimed Phil.

The festival will also feature live entertainment at the AmphitheatreFriday evening from 6-9 PM, Kickin’ Back will take the stage.  Saturday’s entertainment will include the Firelands String Quartet who will perform from 3-5 PM and Sandtown from 6-9 PM.

The festival will run Friday, August 8 from 5-9 PM, Saturday, August 9 from 11 AM-10 PM, and Sunday, August 10 from 11 AM-4 PM.  During the festival, Main Street will be closed to accommodate the food trucks.  Every dollar raised at the festival goes toward supporting the mission of the Huron Rotary which is Service above Self.  More specifically, the money goes to support five $750 scholarships that are awarded to Huron seniors, as well as providing every third grade student with a free dictionary.

Huron's Drinking Water Safe

From the City of Huron:

"Please be advised the city of Toledo has detected the presence of toxic algae in its treated water supply. Customers in the metro region are completely without water and a chaotic rush is on for drinking water at local stores. As a result the city is fielding calls from concerned citizens as to any impact to our water supply. The Water Superintendent is working closely with the Sandusky and Lorain filtration labs for any detection of the toxin in our supply. At present, the city's supply continues to be safe and clear of any toxins. However, we will be monitoring the water quality for any change until the situation is normalized in Toledo. Please feel free to contact me with any questions but the situation is normal at our treatment facility and the water is safe for drinking. I will keep you appraised of any change. Information will be posted via social media. Thank you."

A New Attempt to Compile News from Huron, Ohio

Since the Huron Hometown News ceased publication in December 2013, Huron has been without a source for local news and stories that pertain to our town.  After writing for the Hometown News for many years, I came to cherish the moments that I spent with Huron residents, and particularly the stories that they shared with me.  I also enjoyed keeping residents informed on what was happening in their city.  Hence, I am attempting to create a new source for news, one that is directly related to Huron.  This blog site will not contain any press releases unless they pertain to a Huron business or non-profit or directly affect Huron's residents.  I need your help to make this site successful.  Please let me know about events happening in the city, suggest stories that I should cover, and inform me of any other topics that you think would be of interest to the people of Huron.  There are truly some exciting things happening here, and the stories need to be covered.  I look forward to this new endeavor!
